The Earth

Physical processes occurring inside the Earth affect human activities and environment. Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, relative sea level changes, magnetic field variations, all modify environment and every day life. Studying Earth structure and understanding its interior dynamics is a very important issue.

To discover Earth interior processes it is necessary on one side, to observe surface effects due to these deep geophysical processes and, on the other side, to develop reference Earth models providing a framework to the interpretation of observed data.

Different spatial and time scales are involved in geophysical processes. Moreover, these processes are not independent among each other but must be studied in a multi-disciplinary, global context. Earth should always be considered as a complex system in which interactions among solid Earth, atmosphere and oceans and all the processes occurring in the middle and upper atmosphere have a mutual influence.

Improving our knowledge of the Earth interior and of fluid dynamics is very important when developing volcanic, seismic and relative sea level hazard scenario and when constraining climatic change prediction, which is a global challenge.
