Information on the sequence and the mainshocks

The area interested by the earthquake on April the 6th 2009 was struck in the past by large earthquakes reported by the CPTI04 catalog (working group CPTI04, 2004). The main events occurred in 1349 (Me 6.5), 1461(Me 6.4) and 1703(Me 6.7). The seismic activity of the last days is located at the southern termination of the fault likely responsible for the 1703 event (Int. MCS X, evaluated Magnitude about 6.7) and close to other fault structures to the south.

Historical seismicity of the area (CPTI04, 2004)

More about historical seismicity

The map of  instrumental seismicity (2005-2008) shows that there were no events larger than magnitude 3 in the last year.

Time distribution of the seismicity in the L'Aquila region

The distribution in time of the seismicity in the L'Aquila region starting from January 2009 shows an increment of the recorded seismicity. Histograms   show the time distribution of seismicity  in the rupture area from January 2009: top left,  daily number of earthquakes ; top right, cumulative earthquakes number; bottom, time distribution of magnitude.

Active faults in the L'Aquila region (AAVV)

The focal mechanisms and the aftershocks distribution are consistent with the strike of the main faults in the area.

Seismic zonation map

According to Mappa della Classificazione Sismica del territorio Nazionale, towns and villages struck by these earthquakes belong to the first and second zone of the seismic zonation of the territory.
